Emotional Booty Call

from Back to the Wheel by Sara Hensel

/

about

this is a song about setting and maintaining boundaries with someone who is shiny and charismatic as well as not yet able to reflect on how they rely on others for emotional regulation without reciprocating. it's sort of about the process of a friendship or the emotional intimacy in a relationship going stale as the narrator realizes their needs are not being met.

lyrics

Your emotional booty call found me in the living room
eating lettuce off a towel
watching Netflix shows i'd seen a couple times before
then the house lost power

when you intimate that i'm wholesome as a wholegrain loaf
i wanna spit in your Coke
i think we bore each other long enough to realize
it's time to lighten the load

you overshare but like to insist that i overthink
over bowls of soup
i once believed that every syllable was carved in light
and beyond rebuke

your promotional duty falls right around my free time
we can't coordinate at all
the month that i was sick and you were on a spirit quest
i gave up on courts and balls

your emotional booty call found me in the living room
davenported in the dark
your need, reduced into a golden ratio rectangle,
nothing like a spark

MY MIND'S A THING THAT'S NOT
BEHOLDEN OR DISPOSABLE
when YOU need to talk
